AKC group
The Working group
Guards, haulers, and rescue dogs built for a job.
The AKC calls this group dogkind's blue-collar workers, and it includes some of the oldest breeds in the world. These dogs were developed to do real jobs alongside people: pulling sleds and carts, guarding flocks and homes, and protecting their families. Many of these breeds still do that work today. As a group they're known for size, strength, and brains, and many are big enough that you notice when they walk into a room. They were bred for purpose rather than looks, and they tend to be happiest with a steady routine and something useful to do.
