AKC group
The Toy group
Small companions bred mostly to keep people company.
Toy breeds come in a huge range of coats and colors, but they all share one trait: they're small enough to sit comfortably in a lap. That was largely the point. The AKC describes toys as working dogs of a sort, because their job has always been companionship, meaning being attentive, affectionate, and close by. Some are miniature versions of larger working breeds, while others were lapdogs from the very start. Don't let the size fool you, though. Plenty of these dogs carry far more personality than you'd expect from something that weighs less than a bag of groceries.
