AKC group

The Sporting group

Bird dogs: pointers, retrievers, setters, and spaniels.

These are the hunter's partners, bred to find and fetch feathered game. The group has two main types. Retrievers are built for swimming and specialize in ducks and other waterfowl. Setters, spaniels, and pointers work the grasslands, where quail and pheasant nest. The spaniels flush birds out of cover, the pointers freeze to mark them, and the retrievers bring the bird back. Many of these dogs wear thick, water-repellent coats made for cold mornings in wet fields. Today most of them hunt tennis balls instead, but the enthusiasm hasn't changed: they like a job, open space, and someone to bring things back to.
